Investigation Report
Date: September 28, 2024
Location: Old Stone Jail, Cambria County, PA
Team Present:
Three investigators were on site. This is a small location with an open layout, allowing sound to travel easily between floors.
Environmental Conditions:
Weather conditions were rainy, windy, damp, and warm.
Ambient Noise:
The jail is located on a main downtown roadway, and exterior noise was present throughout the investigation.
Baseline Readings:
No unusual or elevated EMF readings were recorded during baseline sweeps.
Building Structure:
The basement (dungeon) has dirt floors with steep staircases and metal walkways leading between levels. There are multiple holes in the roof, allowing both wind and exterior noise to enter the structure.
Evidence Collected
Both audio and video footage produced multiple points of interest.
A loud knocking sound was captured in the dungeon when no investigators were present. A faint female voice followed the knocking, as if to say, “Who is it?” This event was recorded on camera. Notably, there is no wood present in the dungeon from which the knocking could have originated. At the time, all three investigators were in the room directly above the dungeon with active audio and video equipment and did not hear the noise in real time.
Multiple spirit box sessions produced responses considered intriguing but not yet verifiable. When asked for a name, a number was given instead. When questioned further, the device appeared to confirm it was a prison number. Several names were also received. Follow-up historical research is planned before any of this information is classified as evidence.
During a separate spirit box session in the dungeon, one investigator shone a flashlight into a cell. A voice was captured on video stating, “See me.” This voice did not originate from the spirit box.
In the death row cell, communication was attempted with an individual historically known as “Smitty,” who reportedly disappeared the night before his scheduled execution. His body was never recovered, and he was never located afterward. Given the difficulty of escape from the facility, the case remains unresolved. During the session, the spirit box indicated that Smitty had been murdered and buried in the basement. As the dungeon has a dirt floor, this claim is at least physically plausible, though entirely unverified.
The EMF detector responded during questioning associated with this session.
Conclusions
This location continues to produce compelling material. While some responses remain unverified and should not be considered factual at this stage, the consistency of intelligent-sounding responses and unexplained audio events makes the Old Stone Jail a strong candidate for continued investigation. We plan to return to follow up on the historical information gathered and attempt to validate earlier results.
